LANSING – State Representatives Vicki Barnett (D-Farmington Hills) and Vincent Gregory (D-Southfield) will hold a joint town hall meeting on Monday, March 30, to provide information about job retraining programs offered locally for both the unemployed and underemployed, and to help unemployed residents navigate the state's unemployment system.
"There's no question that Michigan is going through some tough times right now," Barnett said. "This event will help residents who have lost their jobs by providing them with information about job retraining programs and how to get the unemployment benefits they have earned. I encourage residents who are struggling in this tough economy to attend this meeting and find out ways to get back on the job."
The event will take place on Monday, March 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Maxwell Training Center, 33000 Thomas St. in Farmington.
Guests from the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth, the Michigan Economic Development Corp., Michigan Works!, Michigan Department of Human Services, Oakland Livingston Service Agency and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan will be on hand to speak about their programs designed to help job seekers. The presentation will be followed by a breakout session where residents can meet one-on-one with these representatives and get specialized assistance.
"Getting our workers back on the job is my top priority," Rep. Gregory said. "Michigan's economic recovery depends on its workers. By reducing our state's high unemployment rate – which is the highest in the nation – we will help turn our economy around."
